Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Tan & Sunbed FAQs

Have questions about spray tans or sunbeds? Whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular, we’ve answered some of the most common queries to help you feel fully prepared and confident before your appointment.

What is a tanning accelerator?

A tanning accelerator is a lotion applied before using a sunbed to help stimulate melanin production, allowing you to tan more evenly and often more quickly. Many accelerators also contain moisturising ingredients to keep skin hydrated, which can help prolong your tan.

What not to do in a tanning bed?

Avoid using oil-based products, moisturisers, deodorants, or perfumes before your session, as they can create a barrier on the skin and affect how evenly you tan.

Always stick to the recommended time limits for your skin type to prevent overexposure and protective eyewear must be worn at all times to shield your eyes from UV rays.

If you have sunburn, irritated skin, open wounds, or certain skin conditions, it’s best to avoid sunbed use until your skin has fully healed. If you’re ever unsure whether it’s safe for you, our team is always happy to advise and guide you.

Why won't my legs tan but my arms do?

Legs often tan slower because they naturally have fewer melanin-producing cells than areas like your arms. Reduced blood circulation can also affect how colour develops.

Using a tanning accelerator and gently exfoliating before sessions can help improve even colour development.

Do you spray tan naked?

That’s completely up to you. Many clients choose to spray tan fully undressed for an even, line-free result, but you’re welcome to wear underwear or swimwear if you prefer. Our therapists ensure your comfort and privacy throughout.

Do's and don'ts after getting a spray tan?

Do’s:

  • Wear loose, dark clothing after your appointment
This prevents the tan from rubbing off or leaving marks on light fabrics while it’s developing.

  • Follow aftercare instructions carefully
Every spray tan develops slightly differently — following our advice helps you achieve the most even, long-lasting results.

  • Moisturise daily to prolong your tan
Hydrated skin holds colour longer and helps your tan fade evenly. Use a gentle, oil-free moisturiser.

  • Pat your skin dry after showers
Gently pat rather than rub to avoid disrupting the developing tan.

  • Stay cool
Avoid excessive sweating during the development time to prevent streaking.

Don’ts:

  • Shower, swim or exercise for at least 6–8 hours
Water, sweat or steam can interfere with how the tan develops and cause uneven results if done too soon.

  • Use exfoliating products too soon
Avoid scrubs, AHAs or loofahs for several days after your spray tan, as they can cause patchy fading.

  • Apply oils or heavy lotions that may break down the tan
Stick to light, oil-free moisturisers. Oils can lift the tan and lead to uneven patches.

  • Wear tight or restrictive clothing during development
Tight clothes can cause rubbing and lines as the tan sets.

What removes a spray tan immediately?

Exfoliating with a scrub, using products containing glycolic or salicylic acid, or soaking in warm baths can help fade a spray tan quickly. For stubborn areas, a tan remover product can gently lift colour faster. Avoid harsh scrubbing to protect your skin.
